Eric Gilliland initially joined the Washington Area Bicyclist Association as a program assistant in the fall of 1999 after brief forays as a Capitol Hill intern and bicycle messenger.  Hired part time to assist with a ride called Bike DC, Eric quickly made his mark on bicycling in the Washington region through his involvement  on other events such as Bike to Work Day in addition to numerous advocacy and fundraising initiatives.  Eric was eventually hired as executive director by the WABA board of directors January of 2004.  

A bike seat historian, Eric has toured the D-Day battlefields of Normandy, France as well as the Battle of the Bulge and Market-Garden battle sites in Luxembourg, Belgium and Holland.  Eric also recently served as a consultant on bike route development for the Dubai, United Arab Emirates Bike Master Plan.

Eric graduated from Lehigh University (PA) in 1993 with a BA in International Affairs with minors in Economics and History and is a League Certified Bicycling Instructor.  

 

Dorcas Adkins
Safety Education Program Director

Dorcas began work at WABA in February of 2004 and manages WABA’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Education Program, funded by the District of Columbia Department of Transportation, the Maryland State Highway Administration, and the cities of Arlington, VA and Takoma Park, MD.  This program includes school safety lessons for children in grades K-5, weekend or summer camp safety events for children, and a variety of programs for adult cyclists including WABA’s Confident City Cycling classes.  Dorcas is responsible for managing the various grants from all agencies and for teacher trainings, equipment trailer coordination and maintenance, and scheduling of classes. Dorcas has a BS in Medical Technology from Colby-Sawyer College and many years of experience managing her own manufacturing business.  She is a League-certified bicycling instructor.

Glen Harrison
Safety Education Program Coordinator

SRTS State Network Organizer for DC

Glen joined the WABA staff in the fall of 2006 as WABA’s Safety Education Program Coordinator. A League-certified bicycling instructor, Glen delivers WABA’s Safe Routes to Schools program in the District of Columbia. Glen also serves as the Safe Routes to School state network organizer, where he is responsible for encouraging the implementation of this federally mandated program in DC. After serving in the US Air Force, Glen spent three years in Romania and Uzbekistan as part of the Peace Corps. Glen holds a BA in English from the University of Houston.

 

Eve DeCoursey

Membership and Development Manager

Eve DeCoursey brings to WABA a deep love of cycling, and a long history of bicycling advocacy. After several years of daily commuting in Honolulu, she began racing and became the 1985 State Cycling Champion of Hawaii. With a strong urge to improve Hawaii’s cycling conditions, Eve served for 15 years as Executive Director of the Hawaii Bicycling League. She then worked as a Planner within Honolulu’s Department of Transportation Services, developing several safety programs including a bike safety curriculum that could be delivered through Honolulu’s Parks and Recreation. As one of Hawaii’s top triathletes, she also ran a program for coaching beginners, assisting more than 1500 novice cyclists discover the joy of competent cycling. Eve joined WABA this year, first by serving as a consultant for the DC Neighborhood Pace Car Program and now in the Membership  and Development Management position.

Jenn Bress

Membership and Development Assistant

Jenn Bress graduated from George Mason University with a Bachelor in Art and Culture (an amalgamation of New Media art and Poetry) in 2006.  As a student, she began working as a word wrangler at Book Bank Used Books, an independent bookstore in Old Town Alexandria, until she joined forces with WABA in April 2007.  In her free time, she’s the crafty sort, who spends her free time as a local DJ extraordinaire and as a curator of art shows in the DC area.

Chantal Buchser

Event Manager

Chantal is a Maryland local having grown up outside of Baltimore and attending St. Mary’s College of Maryland. Chantal graduated in 2005 with a BA in Political Science with minors in French and African Studies. After completing a semester abroad in West Africa, Chantal began working in international health at Population Services International. After over two years with PSI, Chantal decided to turn her public health interests locally working with WABA. Biking has always been a large part of Chantal’s life as a way to get around, spend time with friends and family, and to stay active. These days you can find her barreling down single track mountain bike trails or riding around town and surrounding areas.

Henry Mesias

Event Assistant

Henry graduated from the University of Maryland with a BA in Sociology in 2005. After graduating from college Henry spent the next few years as a touring musician and local DC area music promoter. Henry joined WABA part time at the end of March 2007 to help out with the busy events season, but soon found himself working full time during the summer months managing events. After leaving DC to live abroad in Chile for a short time Henry returned to WABA in January 2008. Henry is a lifestyle cyclist and goes everywhere by bike. After work hours you can find Henry enjoying a bike ride around the city, playing music with friends, or volunteering his time with local community organizations.     

 

Jon Fleming

Bruce Dwyer
Volunteer

Bruce is on the Board of BikeWalk Virginia and the former Chair of the Alexandria Bicycle Committee. A long time WABA member and cross-state cyclist, Bruce commutes to WABA from Alexandria to help out with just about everything.

John Telesco
Volunteer
